A member asked:

Could taking tylenol (acetaminophen) pm or excedrin pm for 30+ years be the cause of my mothers cirrhosis of the liver?

Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Acetaminophen: Acetaminophen, sold as Tylenol, (acetaminophen) and found in many other medications, is a wonderful medication for pain relief and to lower fevers. However, when taken in excess, it is also very harmful to the liver. One's lifestyle, eg chronic and/or excess alcohol consumption, can lower the threshold (raise risk) for liver damage. If someone has been diagnosed, focus on cure, rather than speculate on cause.
