A member asked:

Bp 114/86 pulse 64 taking atenolol 50mg/day. dr lowered atenolol to 25mg/day and added norvasc (amlodipine) 5mg to increase pulse rate. how do these two melds work?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

As follows: Atenolol is a Beta-blocker- it works by lowering the blood pressure through multiple mechanisms, some involving the brain's output of adrenaline. It will slow one's heart rate and can cause some depression. Norvasc (amlodipine) is a calcium channel blocker that dilates the arteries to lower the blood pressure. It can raise the heart rate very slightly and cause some leg swelling. They can be used together.
