A 35-year-old member asked:

Are there any major side effects of stent placement?

Rarely: Once properly placed, major side effects are rare. It is possible to get scarring in a stent (in-stent restenosis). It is also possible to get stent fractures (a break in a stent). These take time to develop if at all. Infections of the stent are rare. People rarely develop allergic reactions.

No: Carotid stents can not be seen from the outside. It takes an x-ray to be able to visualize the carotid stent.
A 34-year-old member asked:

Can you tell me if there are any side effects of carotid stent procedure?

Dr. Oliver Aalami
Vascular Surgery 23 years experience
Potentially yes....: Carotid stenting is associated with a 4%-8% stroke risk (higher than endarterectomy), 1%-2% potential risk for a heart attack (lower than endarterectomy), and femoral artery access complications such as bleeding (unique to carotid stenting). In the properly selected patient (suitable anatomy) with active heart disease, previous surgery or neck radiation, carotid stenting is a great procedure.

What is a stent?

Small metal coil: A coronary stent is a small metal coil, slotted tube, or mesh structure that is placed in an artery to keep it open. The stent is mounted on a balloon catheter and delivered to the site of the blockage. When the balloon is inflated, the stent expands and is pressed against the inner wall of the coronary artery. The balloon is removed, and the stent remains in place, keeping the artery open.

A 29-year-old male asked:

Medicated stent vs. Non medicated stent? Any thoughts on this decision?

2 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Bennett Werner
Cardiology 44 years experience
Yes: Drug eluting stents (medicated) lower the risk of recurrent blockage but require 2 antiplatelet drugs for a full year. Pts with no tendency to bleeding or need for other surgery should receive one, especially if the lesion is characterized as complex. Bare metal stents (non-medicated) are a good alternative for those who can't receive a des. Your interventionalist will decide.
