Alcohol and nursing: Alcohol levels in the breast milk are similar to your blood alcohol levels. Having an occasional alcoholic drink has not been shown to be harmful to a breastfed infant. It is best to avoid breastfeeding for about 2 hours after drinking one alcoholic beverage. Excessive use of alcohol can cause impaired motor development, changes in sleep patterns, decrease in milk intake and hypoglycemia.
