Cramps: The cramping that you are describing has the medical term dysmenorrhea. The primary treatments for that are using antiinflammatories like ibuprofen and also hormonal suppression with oral contraceptives. Together, they are very effective at getting your pain level down to a more tolerable level. Of course, evaluation by your gyn to make sure there are not other issues going on is important.

Benefits: Birth control pills offer many non-contraceptive benefits. They make periods shorter & lighter with less cramping & less anemia due to blood loss. They regulate periods % can be used to move periods if they are occurring at an inconvenient time. They decrease the risk of endometrial hyperplasia, endometriosis, uterine cancer &,best of all, decrease the risk of ovarian cancer by 50% after 7 years of use.
