Paradoxic darkening: Hydroquinone is a bleaching agent. It will lighten any skin that it is applied to. The only known side effects are allergy (like everything else) and, if applied at a strength greater than 4%, the possibility of paradoxical darkening of the treated skin. Apply it once a day, at bedtime, to the darkened skin.
