Progesterone pill: The "mini-pill," is a contraceptive that contains only progesterone, no estrogen. Spotting is very common on progesterone-only pills, almost universal. This chance is reduced by taking it at exactly the same time each day, and spotting usually decreases after 3-6 months of therapy but sometimes persists. Some women stop having periods entirely after 6-12 months of continuous therapy.

Breakthru bleeding: between periods, and other type of menstrual irregularity, is very common with the "mini" pill and should not be reason for concern. This may change as you continue to take the mini pill. It is important to be as consistent as possible in taking the mini pill at the same time every day to ensure maximum protection from pregnancy.
