Since: the neuromyelitis in Devic's disease usually affects the OPTIC NERVES the effect on life expectancy is minimal! Hopefully TREATMENT will improve the QUALITY of life (not just the QUANTITY. New treatments for MS and ALS (Lou gehrig's disease) are "in the works!!!" Hope this helps and Good Luck Dr Z
