Consider switching: If a woman doesn't like her birth control pills, she can consider switching to a different pill or other hormonal contraceptive, or switching to a non-hormonal contraceptive. After switching to something else, she can stop the birth control pills, and her period will normalize to whatever would be "normal" for using that new contraceptive method. If no new method is started, then babies happen!
