Scary Hair Story: Painful scalp and/or hair ("trichodynia") is fairly uncommon. It may be associated with hair loss. There are a few theories behind it but first think about what you do to and put in your hair (frequent rubbing or massage, hair creams or gels, shampoos, conditioners, etc) and also whatever medications, herbs or drugs you may be taking. After that it's a sleuthing game best left to a dermatologist

See dermatologist: Who may be able to find out the cause for your scalp and hair problems. An endocrinology consult may be required later.
