Sunburn: Many times after getting a sunburn skin peels and becomes very itchy. In a more extreme case, an individual can develop a histamine based reaction to sunlight called solar urticarial. Treatment includes topical or oral antihistamines such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and cool compresses. Don't irritate the skin further by shaving or rubbing the region. Use a soft towel. Can also use calamine lotion or silvadene

Happens when healing: Rashes are hard to describe in words, so a doctor's exam may be needed. However, sunburns do itch... they sting more at first, and then itch during healing. Most people can use hydrocortisone cream (over-the-counter) twice a day on the sunburn areas, and also take an antihistamine like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to decrease itching. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) causes drowsiness and helps one get to sleep.
