Oral herpes -tricky!: HSV-1 or 'oral herpes' can be a tricky virus. Obviously if someone has an inflammatory lesion (big red spot) on the lips, then they are infectious to someone who is not infected. The tricky thing, is sometimes the virus can be passed without an obvious 'cold sore' -we call that viral shedding in medical terms. The virus can pass from mouth-to-mouth, so only true way to avoid is not to share saliva

If the other : Person was not having an active outbreak it is unlikely you will catch it. It is more likely that you had a cold sore as a child and already harbor the virus anyway! As many as 90% of adults have had cold sores at some time in their life.
