Upset child: It is hard to be a mother. I would need to know if you are breastfeeding, or what other ways your child is getting food. If you are breastfeeding and they are distressed you may want to see if you have a sore or rash on your breast. The child may be allergic to the formula you are using. The best answer is to get to the pediatrician soon so you can find a solution.

Breast or bottle: Breast fed kids can poo a little smear every feed or fill a crib with soft poo once a week. The variability in their stooling pattern is quite wide.Bottle fed kids usually get into a daily routine involving 1-2 stools a day by the end of their first week. See your pcp if this doesn't fit your situation.
