Various causes: An injury, a sports strain, an infection such as shingles or a breast abscess, a viral infection of the muscles between the ribs (Bornholm disease), inflammation of the joint between the front of a rib and the breastbone (Tietze’s syndrome), a lung problem such as pleurisy can be the cause.
