Prevention is best: You should consider ongoing suppressive treatment to help prevent outbreaks. Treating outbreaks after onset really doesn't help much. Any of the three herpes antiviral drugs -- valacyclovir, acyclovir, famciclovier -- is mildly effective, but only if started within a day of onset of the outbreak. After that, there is no benefit over natural healing.

Prescription meds.: If the outbreak just started, antiviral meds can help. They are only available by prescription. Consider a Healthtap Prime Consult, if you cannot reach your doc on weekends, or don't have one, to be evaluated and treated for this, including e-prescribing antivirals, if indicated.

HSV 2: The best way is take an antiviral such as valtrex, (valacyclovir) famvir, or acycolvir as soon as you have symptoms. In addition use a condom to lessen your recurrences.
