Poison ivy catching?: Poison ivy is allergic contact dermatitis to a plant oil. 96% of people react to it. It takes three days on average to start breaking out. By then, the oil is gone from the skin. If you wash the clothes he wore the day he got it, you can break out three days later, but you cannot get it from touching him after he washes. The affected skin can get infected though, so covering it is not a bad idea.

Poison Ivy: is not contagious. The allergic reaction is caused by the oil from the plant which gets on the skin. The oil may spread as one touches other parts of the body or touches a piece of clothing that has the oil on it or even if someone touches another with the oil. But once the oil has been washed off the body, the resulting rash or blisters do not contain any oil and are not contagious. Time heals.
