A member asked:

Could depression affect organ transplants?

Stress and healing: I feel that depression would adversely affect the healing process from an organ transplant. Severe depression can impair your ability to take care of yourself. You might miss medical appointments and/or medication, neglect your hygiene which then puts you at risk for infection. The added mental stress can also slow down the wound healing process.

When untreated: A new study has just shown that adequate treatment of depression is linked to better 10 year survival after liver transplantation for alcohol related disease. So, depression affected those recipients. It would be logical, but is not yet known, whether the same is true with other types of transplants. But, patients should be treated for their own sake anyway.
