Lung inflammation: Tuberculosis (TB) can spread to many organ systems but involves lungs as initial site of infection. It induces intense inflammation that destroys normal lung tissue & causes cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, fever & night sweat. Body's immune system tries to contain infection by forming granulomas to wall off the TB bug, but cytokines released by activated immune cells causes damage to lungs.
