How closely should i follow expiration dates on meds? like zyrtec (cetirizine) i found an unopened bottle but it expired about 6 months ago. can i still use it?

Too long: six month is too long,i do not think there is any harm of taking it, but they will be no benefit, if it was few days up to a month i mught have defferent opinion six month is too long. buy a new one.
