Location: Typically, canker sores are inside your mouth in the mucosa (the lining on inside of your cheeks, lips, and under the tongue). Cold sores are usually outside the mouth in the skin of the lips, but can sometimes also occur inside the lips. Cankers have multiple suspected causes--injury, virus, even fungus are all possibilities. Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex 1 virus only.
