Thinning hair: in women may be due to estrogen deficiency (usually associated with menopause) or thyroid deficiency. Blood tests can reveal either of these treatable causes of hair loss. Some women inherit the gene that causes what is known as "male pattern baldness" and Rogaine (minoxidil) can be helpful if that is the cause. Hair loss in the temples can be related to traction placed on hair in styling.

Slight benefit: It may help a little. You may wish to use minoxidil. You may wish to see a dermatologist. Iron deficiency was once included in lists of causes for hair loss but a good study a few years ago put an end to that. A 48-year old woman tends to thin on top, not at the temples. A dermatologist might help you.
