A Fungus: Thrush is caused by a fungal overgrowth. It is more common in people with suppressed immune systems or following antibiotic treatment. It has many presentations but most often is a white "cottage cheese" like growth that wipes off and leaves a reddish sometimes bleeding tissue underneath. Probiotics which restore healthy bacteria are sometimes used to help the body control the overgrowth.
