Prescribed vs abuse: It depends. If it is as a prescribed control substance for the treatment of pain, such as morphine, your docotr will take care to deal with side effects, ie sedation or constipation. If the person is addicted to, say heroin or synthetic opiods like oxycontin, then the problems of tolerance and drug dependence then the person might need detox and sometimes maintenance with ie naltrexone or other.
