May compound, yes: Since dm degrades both macrovascular & microvascular blood supply to tissues and increased sugar changes/interferes with the function of most cellular proteins, yes it likely affects the health of hair follicles. Also all hair follicles have dormant periods during which the hair, which has stopped growing, falls out. However, this is a complex issue with many other factors, many still poorly known.
