Virus or GERD: It could be a viral illness which should usually resolve in 1-2 days, or it could be GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Symptoms of GERD are often noticed while laying down. Try having nothing but clear liquids for 24 hours, and/or taking an over-the-counter acid reducer, eg. Zantac (ranitidine) or Pepcid. If symptoms are recurrent, you should be tested for H. pylori, which cause GERD and can be treated
