Toenails: From what it sounds like, you may have removed the cuticle, a layer of skin that can grow along with the nail & is easily removed. Nails are multi-layered & the dents will likely disappear as the nail grows out, normal. If you do see thickening or darkening of the nail, consider possible fungal infection & see your doctor for treatment. A podiatrist can address any other toenail related issue.
