Sperm + egg = baby: Conception is the beginning of pregnancy. It occurs when a sperm cell from a male joins with the egg from a female. During sexual intercourse a male deposits a large number of sperm into a woman's vagina. Sperm swim up into the uterus and then the fallopian tubes. If one sperm cell reaches an egg while it is in the tube, the two cells can join forming a zygote which develops into a baby.

Conception, as defined by the generation of a fertilized ovum, occurs within day or so of the sex. However, it takes about two weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG to produce a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period. Use first morning urine and follow instructions for the test carefully. I

Theoretically: But not reliable ones. A serum test is reliable on the 11-12th day after ovulation, home tests are similar if you are certain of the ovulation day.
