What is conception and when does it occur?

Sperm + egg = baby: Conception is the beginning of pregnancy. It occurs when a sperm cell from a male joins with the egg from a female. During sexual intercourse a male deposits a large number of sperm into a woman's vagina. Sperm swim up into the uterus and then the fallopian tubes. If one sperm cell reaches an egg while it is in the tube, the two cells can join forming a zygote which develops into a baby.
