Normal behavior: Beyond infancy, sexual behaviors increase as toddlers become more aware of their body parts, including their genitals, sensations deriving from their genitals, and gender differences. In general, sexual behaviors in children of this age group are normal. Talk to your pediatrician if concerned.

Self stimulation: Self stimulation in young children is common, and usually not cause for concern. Avoiding dramatic reaction to this behavior will help prevent shameful feelings regarding sexuality later. Masturbation in the presence of other people should not be allowed (redirect to private place and gently explain it is not to be shared). Abrupt behavior changes associated with sexual acting out is concerning
