Patient dependent : Unfortunately there is no best treatment. Diferent patient will respond diferently to diferent treatment options. The best treatment will be what works best for that specific patient. Some people will respond to medication, some to behavioral modification, other to both.

Many options: The treatment is to find the mood stabilizer that works for you. Options include lithium, valproic acid (depakote), Lamotrigine (lamictal), aripiperazole (abilify), quatiapine (seroquel), Oxcarbazepine (trileptal), and Carbamazepine (tegretol). Your psychiatrist can help you find the one that is right for you.

Mood stabilizers: Mood stabilizers are used to treat bipolar disorder. Lithium and depakote would be two examples of mood stabilizers but there are others, depending on symptoms, and depending on what works for the patient.
