Endocarditis: Intravenous drug use is can introduce bacteria into the blood stream either from the needle or the skin. These bacteria can infect the heart valves. This is called endocarditis. This can sometimes be treated with antibiotics (and treatment for drug addiction), but sometimes also requires surgery.
