Chromosomes are: paired, so there are gene pairs for various traits. For example, with eye color, Brown is a dominant gene and Blue is not(termed recessive). Since Brown is dominant, if one of the pair of genes is Brown, and the other is Blue, you will have Brown eyes. The dominant gene is the one that is expressed. The recessive Blue will only be expressed if both genes are Blue.
