Higher cancer risk: Smoking may increase the chance that infection with a high risk (cancer causing) type of HPV may go on to precancerous changes (dysplasia) or cancer. However, the large majority of infections, even with high risk types, don't ever progress to cancer, so the overall effect of smoking is small. Of course there are plenty of other important reasons to not not smoke!
