Can herbal treatments of hiv actually work?

In short, no.: There is currently no cure for hiv. Herbal treatments have been evaluated but none have been shown to be effective. Only anti-hiv medications in combination of at least 3 meds (known as highly active antiretroviral therapy or haart) have been shown to have effectiveness in keeping HIV at bay, although haart is also not a cure, but have made HIV a more manageable chronic illness.
