Risk vs benefit: Think of every medication, procedure & test as a double edge sword. You need to figure out of desired benefit is greater than potential risk. With regards to antibiotics, we don't recommend them for simple colds & sinus infections which are typically caused by viruses. But most bladder infections & sexually transmitted infections/diseases respond to antibiotics (and are worth risk if not allergic)
