Protein assay: Laboratory assay designed to identify a specific protein within a sample (eg serum sample). The biochemical properties of protein enable its passage through a gel matrix across electric current. The specific protein is then identified through detection by antibody. Oddly, there is such a thing as Southern and Northern blots (for DNA and RNA, respectively), but no Eastern blot.
