Membrane separation: Both procedures rely on convection or passage of a liquid true a filtering membrane under positive pressure. The difference is the permeability of the membrane with only water and electrolytes on ultrafiltrate and bigger molecules on hemofiltrate therefore achieving different clinical goals. Some hemofilters also have special membranes that adsorb toxins as plasma passes through it.
