Herpes? Canker sore?: Recurrent oral herpes outbreaks almost always are outside, on or near the lips. Sores inside the mouth more often are canker sores, an entirely separate problem. A new oral herpes infection can cause internal sores, but usually not only one side; also bad sore throat, sometimes fever. If in doubt, call your doctor. Pain of canker sores sometimes can be helped with an anesthesthetic ointment.
