Several causes: Twitching episodes as one falls asleep is a benign phenomenon known as hypnic jerks, commonly called sleep starts. Twitching during sleep on the other hand can be caused by sleep apnea, periodic limb movements of sleep, or just the normal twitching that sometimes occurs during rem sleep.
