Hypertension stages: Hypertension (elevated blood pressure) is usually classified in stages (not types), but perhaps this will answer your question. Stage 1 hypertension is defined as systolic blood pressure between 140 and 159 or diastolic pressure between 90 and 99. In Stage 2 hypertension, systolic pressure is 160 or higher or diastolic pressure is 100 or higher.
