Should a mass on pituitary gland be surgically removed?

Pituitary: Surgery would depend on the size of the gland and any hormones affected by a pituitary mass. I hope your primary doctor has referred you to an Endocrinologist who discussed all findings and options. If you have not yet seen an Endocrinologist please have your doctor to refer you.

Depends: Small nodules on the pituitary gland can be seen in up to 3% of people who have a CAT scan or MRI of the brain. If they are small (<1 cm), are not making any hormones, and causing no symptoms, they can be watched. If it is producing prolactin, it is treated with medication. Other hormone producing pituitary nodules are typically removed surgically.
