Depends: Most of us need one well-functioning kidney to live normally. However, one needs to think seriously before deciding to become a living donor. After all, it is a major surgery (mortality rate 2-3 in 10,000) and it requires general anesthesia. Recent studies have shown that former donors do have slightly higher chance of pregnancy-related complications (e.g. pre-eclampsia).
