Depends: In most jurisdictions, an optometrist or ophthalmologist is required to generate a prescription for contact lenses. Some optical shops have an optometrist on site but those that do not cannot fit you without the prescription. Your best strategy is to see an ophthalmologist who has training in comprehensive eye diagnosis and treatment, and get a prescription for contacts.
