What causes blood in the stool?

Lots of things: The most common causes of blood in the stool are hemorrhoids and an anal fissure (tear in anus). Other causes include cancer, poyps, diverticulosis, angioectasia and colitis. Anyone with blood in their stool should discuss this with their doctor as further evaluation is necessary.

See doctor: Rectal bleeding is not normal and should always be evaluated. See a colorectal surgeon, who will do a complete evaluatin and examination, and can treat most causes of rectal bleeding.
