Why do you have to fast to determine diabetes diagnosis?

More accurate: There are other criteria for diagnosis of diabetes that do not require fasting: random glucose, post meal glucose, hba1c that looks at prior 3 mos of glucose. The fasting glucose is the oldest and most established diagnostic tool.

No- see below: If fasting for >8 hours. Fasting sugar 100-125 is pre-diabetes and /or 2-hrs after eating 140-199 is prediabetes. Fasting -126 and higher; and /or 2 hours after eating, 200 and greater, is diabetes can get home blood glucose testing equipment over the counter in pharmacies.
