Back Pain: Pain on breathing can be a sign of pleural pain, which could accompany a cold. If a very sharp pain, you could have ruptured a small air sac. But don't worry, these usually heal spontaneously. If your breathing gets harder and/ or you develop a fever, call your doctor immediately; otherwise, the pain should subside on its own.

Rib muscle strain: Between our ribs are muscles called intercostals. They can be strained or pulled like any other muscle. Even a sneeze can cause this. If it hurts when straining or breathing deep, this is the likely cause. Over the counter medicine like aleve (naproxen) may help.
