Many options: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections & hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do a home pregnancy test . There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. No. Stressful times?: Sometimes events in our lives or the lives of our family and friends can affect our cycles. Perhaps seasonal events, like at school, can make a couple of periods irregular. If there is no history of stressful events but one of unusual bleeding, then a call for appointment with obgyn might be considered. At this point starting a "diary" showing date, events, time and amount of bleeding helps doctor.

Beta HCG: A pregnancy test measures a hormone called beta HCG which rises progressively in pregnancy. After a pregnancy ends, beta HCG levels drop by 1/2 about every 2 days, but highly sensitive pregnancy tests can still turn positive for up to 2 months thereafter. Depending on how many weeks along you were at the time of the miscarriage, it often takes about that many weeks to test negative (up to 8).

Menorrhagia: There is no good answer for you on an online blind query. Hheavy menses (menorrhagia) is something that you will need to see your Gynecologist about in person. An exam and most likely and ultrasound will be the minimum and you may also need an endometrial biopsy. There are a host of reasons a woman's period can dysregulate and there's a process to go through before a solutions can be found.

A 31-year-old female asked:
What does heavy bleeding for 7 days with big clots twice a month mean?
1 doctor answer • 1 doctor weighed in

Dr. Robert Kwok answered

It means a...: A trip to the doctor would be wise. Many women have occasional variation of their mucus discharge, some spotting between periods, a heavier or lighter period, a longer or shorter one, or even a missed period. Having one or two of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean there is a medical issue, but a week of "heavy bleeding" twice a month is a blood loss problem that should be evaluated.
