Bacterial infection: Usually staph or strep, possibly from touching the eyelid with dirty infected hands, from a foreign body etc. Treatment includes antibiotic eye drops and/or tablets, warm packs application. Hope you feel better!

Hot compresses: A stye is an obstruction of the opening of one of the many glands of the eyelid. Warm compresses applied 3 times a day for ten minutes can often improve styes.
