Why needed: Patients that use the wax will always have to use the wax while wearing orthodontic brackets. However, for the patients that do not use the wax, after about 2 weeks they find that their cheeks get use to the brackets and they never have to use the wax. Overall it is more comfortable to get use to the brackets and not have to be bothered by the inconvenience of the wax.

Yes usually: If you feel the wax helps you with the initial discomfort of wearing braces, you can usually find it at a pharmacy but of course you will have to check and see. You can always call your doctors office to ask where you might purchase some extra wax as i'm sure they have other patients that have had the same question in the past :).Hang in there, your mouth will adjust soon to the brackets.

Ask your Ortho: You really should need very little and not on a regular basis. The most difficult period is the beginning as your mouth gets used to the new brackets and wires. I'm sure your orthodontist can supply you with some. If something continues to bother you or acts up in the future, it might require a slight adjustment. This is not unusual.
