Patella / kneecap: The most common reason for knee "cracking" is softening of the cartilage of the patella (kneecap). This condition is called "chondromalacia patellae". It occurs more often is women and is thought to be related to anatomical and muscular variations in some individuals. Oftentimes specific exercises or knee braces can improve the condition. Surgery is rarely indicated.
