Irritate cornea: Your body will try and wash out objects placed on the cornea, so excessive tearing may actually dry out your cornea, the outermost layer of your eyeball. It coul also get scratched, become red and painful after being moved about while your eyes are moving when you sleep (rapi eye movement, or rem sleep).
